Imagine packing your house and rebuilding it
to suit your needs each time you move.
This house of tomorrow is as close as the University of Texas,
where graduate students in architecture and engineering designed
a mobile, solar-powered home and car to compete in October's Solar
Decathlon in Washington. UT is one of 14 finalist schools, as
is Texas A&M University.
The decathlon, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and
the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, opened the competition
last spring. Each finalist school received a $5,000 check to start.
"Winning the competition is not our big goal," she said.
"We're interested enough in solar energy and firmly believe
we have to find alternatives to fossil fuels. Based on our culture
and industry I'd say we we're about 20 years from owning homes
like this." |
